Brazilian underworld meets the modern physical theatre

November 2005

A multicultural, musical masterpiece bringing together the Brazilian underworld with European modern physical theatre.

Songs that have been sung underground are combined with movements towards freedom. SoulSports is looking for freedom from mental, physical and social shackles through revolutionary movement techniques and musical cultures. The work combines the acrobatic and aggressive nature on Afro-Brazilian Capoeira and the sensitive movements of new dance.

The living music played and sung by wonderful performers combines Kalevala-poetry, hymns and songs of workers with Capoeira and the rhythms of Samba. Capoeira has never been sung in Finnish before. This work has been done as a collaboration in between young professional artists from Oulu (Finland) and Helsinki (Finland) together with others.

The work is produced, directed and performed by Sami Henrik Haapala. Other performers include Vaatu Kalajoki, Juha Viitamäki, Marjo Kiukaanniemi ja Katja Mustonen.
